Southwest Virginia Today: Agencies Address Winter Weather Response Changes
Virginia’s Southwest Virginia Today last week highlighted a recent news conference by the Virginia Department of Transportation, Department of Emergency Management and Virginia State Police, in which the state agencies explained their response to last year’s snow and ice-blocked interstate that left hundreds of vehicles trapped for hours.
Among the steps taken to bolster road maintenance response, which include improved communications between agencies, deploying additional equipment and putting additional video cameras in place – as part of the Interstate 81 corridor improvement program – VDOT uses Iteris’ ClearPath Weather for its weather forecasts.
VDOT will be adding about 15 to 20 snow plows and salt treatment vehicles that will focus on inclines along the interstates, including I-77, as well as stage four-wheel-drive tractors and motor graders in order to move any stranded vehicles safely and efficiently.
